Faith Is a Gift From God
By Bethany Swann, Age 14, Morristown-Hamblen High School West. Manley Baptist Church, Morristown, Tennessee

The answer to the question of where children learn about faith varies from one child to the next. When children are beginning to learn about God and their faith, there may be many people and places in their lives that teach them and encourage them. Sunday School, Worship services, Vacation Bible School, family, members, friends, organizations, and even possibly school can all be a part of learning and growing in their faith. I think that in most cases, more than one person is responsible for a child learning about what faith is.

God has always been involved in my life, from day one. My parents and grandparents all shared a part in helping me learn and grow in my faith. Having grown up with that influence in my life makes me realize why I am the person I am. I remember when my mom and dad would read Bible stories to me and help me understand who God is and what he did for me.

As I get older my faith gets deeper, and I find that my friends also teach me things every day about believing in God. I think that for all teenagers and children, as we grow up we see friends and family go through different situations and we have to ask ourselves how they make it through. Knowing that their faith is what they depended on is an inspiration to me.

My mom gave me a verse one time that said, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Hebrews 11:1) Faith is a gift of God and not a material thing. I think that in a child's life there are so many different people and places that will have an impact on their relationship with God and how strong their faith will be. No matter how old I get, I will always grow in Christ and my faith will always be strong.
