Wisdom and Wondering

Advent II
By Anni Macht Gibson

Leaves cascade,
a golden red carpet
laid to welcome
the Christ child.

The congregation sings:
“Emmanuel shall come,
to thee, O Israel.”
and as one, turns
to the day of fanfare.

Divine. Human. Among us.

Imagine:

He squalled, suckled at his
mother’s breast, slept.
At six months He sat up,
eyes wide to a world
of tents, shepherds and camels;
in time, crawled, chubby hands
clutching in discovery
at small stones in the sand.
Near His first birthday,
came those hesitant first steps,
holding onto Joseph’s fingers,
drank goat’s milk
from an olive wood cup.
And Mary, who bore him,
watched over these milestones,
just another mother, beaming.
Oblivious to the crown
of thorns that would
adorn her precious little king.
