ArchivesThrough the Mist, There Is HopeBy Kevin A. Hagan When I was younger, I spent many happy vacations with my grandparents up in the mountains of North Carolina. Now when I say they lived in the mountains, I literally mean the mountains. Twenty feet from the door of their house was a steep valley. You didn't see a next-door neighbor across the street; you saw just another mountain. Each morning during my visits, I would often wake up and not be able to see a thing outside the window due to the fog. This thick, dense, white mist blanketed the entire landscape, and gave me no indication that there was anything beyond what I could see ten feet in front of me. The only clue that there was other life outside of my limited sight was the mooing of cows off in the distance on the surrounding mountainside. Gradually, as the day progressed, the sun would warm the side of the hills. The mist would slowly burn off and the beautiful mountaintops would be revealed around me, giving me a since of awe and making me feel even smaller than I was. Throughout our lives, we are often preoccupied only with what is foremost in our minds. This "mist" will often obstruct our vision, preventing us from paying attention to the other things happening around us. The mist may come in the form of a tragic event that may narrow our vision to one of uncertainty and doubt. Yet, through this mist shines a great light, the light of God. With it, our eyes shall be opened and He will show us there is hope. Perhaps we may not have a dramatic epiphany, or truly understand the meaning of something immediately, but if we let God's love shine through, the mist will rise and all will be made known. © 2001 Kevin A.
