Turn of the Year
By Mark Phillips

The snow was as silent as the houses where
Families slept on New Year's morning.
Electric icicles melted the flakes that dared
Alight on Christmas decorations still burning.

Another cycle was wrapped up last night
At prayer, parties, or televised global watches.
Another turn of the wheel that starts the journey
One more year at a time.

Lovers kissed, children blurrily beat their pots-and-pan
Drums down midnight streets;
Faithful prayed, parents cast aside their caution and
Laughed at silly games.

We marked our journey round the sun once more
With careless mirth and friendly pokes at quirks
We call cute by now.

Some lost parents this year, some gained sons,
One lost her first pet hamster this very eve,
One gained her father's heart-strong beating;
The circle turns round life and loss,
Blonde and gray,
Birth and death,
Go and stay.

Older, we wonder,
Younger, we revel,
Together we cancel our plans for defeat
And refire our hearts at the top of the wheel
Again.
