On the Bridge: Haiku
By Christina Berry
After more than fifteen years as a church volunteer and church staff, Christina Berry is a student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, studying for ministry in the Presbyterian Church, USA. She is the writer for the PC (USA) Children's Mission Yearbook, and also writes essays, poetry and church school curriculum.

Heart heavy like a
Lead slug, I bend, doubled up,
Shot through with sorrow.

Sheltering oaks stand
Silently over this bridge:
Sentinels of pain.

Through the rails I see
Trembling mayflies hesitate,
Shimmer on water.

Gray brown glistening
Water snakes slither below,
Shining like a tear.

My splashing dog does
Not hear my cry. Down there he
Leaps up in pure joy.

My eyes lift to see
A bright red bird slashing the
Heavens. God is here.
