We Shall Teach
By Holly Yeuell
Holly is Director of Christian Education at the Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Birmingham, Alabama. Her passion is Celtic spiritual formation.

Every minute of every day
I am a teacher.
I am a mother, I work for a church,
called to teach
the children of God,
the children of faith. How should I teach? And what should it be?
Show me, O God,
the way of your Word,
the journey of life.

We shall teach Love,
that each child is loved, that love is the way,
that love is of God.

We shall teach Joy,
the joy of release and exuberance in life
that free children know till they grow to forget,
to see all things new,
created, redeemed.

We shall teach Peace,
though we are at war.
peace within, peace without,
kingdom building skills,
metamorphic values.

We shall teach Patience with ourselves
and with God,
with politicians’agendas
and self-centered churches,
God’s holy time and God’s holy plan.

We shall teach Kindness
in deed and in word,
healing balm for the hurt of the world.

We shall teach Goodness,
nurturing within
the innate core of all beings
the image of God.

We shall teach Faithfulness,
turning toward light
even while blind.

We shall teach Gentleness
to touch, speak and listen
with holy intent.

We shall teach Self Control,
balance and wholeness,
reflection and prayer
over preemptive action.
