ArchiveRemembering Christmas I have several memories of Christmas’ past. My first cat, Prissy, who just recently died, loved to climb on the Christmas tree. She’d spend all of Christmas Day hiding in the branches making the ornaments swing to and fro. When she was in college, my aunt used to spend Christmas with my family. My sister, brother, and I would coax her into sleeping on the couch and watching for Santa Claus. She always slept through his arrival! Then in middle school, my maternal grandfather had a heart attack and died on Christmas morning. I remember seeing him on Christmas Eve and thinking that I would never see him again. I was not close to my grandfather, but this was the first death in my immediate family. It also happened at Christmas and made me realize how much my family really meant to me. I am very close to my maternal grandmother. I began to wonder if I was going to lose her soon, too. Several years later I moved to Texas. One Christmas, snow fell. Only about one inch stuck and not for long. I ran outside and made a “snow angel.” It was pretty muddy. Last Christmas I went to Minnesota for the first time to meet my boyfriend’s family. Everything was covered in crystal white snow. It was beautiful! Jason and his father took me ice fishing, and Jason’s aunt and mom cooked and baked such wonderful food! It made this time of year very special. But this Christmas, I will be a college graduate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I am going to visit my family and friends in Texas. I am going to make more memories! © 2004 Christina S. Roser | View
