The Eye Exam
By Dorothy Robinson

ButterflyOne the problems of being over fifty
Is that now my eyesight is not as nifty.
Things look blurred and often double,
Making reading a lot of trouble.
My bifocal glasses don’t help enough,
And my arms are just not long enough.
I try to adjust the lights and position,
But I know I need to see a physician.

Life can be like my aging eyes;
Seeing poorly, I can believe lies.
If I only see those things up close
There will soon be a pity party to host.
My nearsighted focus is all about me.
Soon I forget what I ought to be.
I moan and whine and loudly complain
About whatever presently causes me pain.

I need to remember to take a look out;
There’s so much more than myself, no doubt.
Look out at the world and its desperate needs.
Look up at the one on whom my soul feeds.
Look back at God’s blessings with gratitude
And develop a more thankful attitude.
Look ahead with joy and expectation;
Then focus and live with determination.

We live by faith, not by sight.  2 Corinthians 5:7, New International Version

For this reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 1 Peter 1:5-9, New International Version
