Sharing Christmas: A Taiwanese Perspective
By Nancy Fottrell

Christmas Tree and PresentsIt’s good to be Christian because we can celebrate Christmas, which is a lot of fun.

I was born in Taiwan, a Buddhist country where people don’t know Jesus. So we don’t have Christmas. Since becoming Christian, I love Christmas. Sometimes my American husband, Brian, and I will visit his brother in New York and celebrate Christmas there.  Sometimes we will go to California to visit his other brother. This is how we celebrate when we are with Brian’s family.

In 2002, we went to New York and celebrated Christmas there. We went to a dinner party at the home of the in-laws of Brian’s brother. His brother married an African-American. So her whole family is African-American. I haven’t had a chance to know African-Americans, so this is a good opportunity for me to learn more about them.

On Christmas, we stayed in his brother’s house talking and eating and enjoying the music. We also opened the gifts. This is the happiest time. In Taiwan, we don’t give gifts that often and the gift for holidays is usually food. I love gifts. I get new clothes every year. I love Christmas music. It’s so joyful!

After Christmas, we went sledding. It’s exciting and a lot of fun. In 2003, we went to California to see Brian’s other brother. His house is big and beautiful. His parents-in-law live near the beach and we went there for dinner Christmas Eve. The father-in-law is the vice president of a company. He has great knowledge. We talked about Chinese culture, business. We ate fondue. We opened gifts after that.

After Christmas, we went out to have fun. The neighborhood is so quiet and safe. Not much traffic.  In 2004, we went to a friend’s house to celebrate Christmas. A lot of friends were there. I enjoyed the fellowship and good food. In 2005, we invited some friends to our apartment for Christmas. My husband enjoyed cooking for my friends and my friends liked his food. We had a good time. I enjoyed having friends around.

Christmas is coming soon. I don’t know what to do for it. Are you ready?
