Easter--Bring It On
By Beany

Vase of FlowersI love being a bunny. Usually when people describe bunnies they say such great things. We’re cute, adorable, fuzzy, sweet, cuddly, and smart!

We’re also a symbol of Easter. In ancient times, we were seen as the bringers of renewal and new life. So it makes sense that, through the years, we’ve become a symbol of the holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. As “Easter bunnies,” we’re messengers of the time when anything is possible and when all things can be made new.

Because bunnies are “in” at Easter time, people sometimes buy real ones to give as presents. The problem with this is that a lot of people don’t realize we’re real pets, not toys. Then we usually are ignored and die from neglect; sent to a shelter, where most of us are euthanized; or “released” outside, where domestic rabbits can’t survive.

I was one of those neglected bunnies. I was stuck in a tiny cage outside and almost starved when the people who bought me up and left for two weeks. Then my mom rescued me and gave me the opportunity for a new life. I wouldn’t have believed it was possible for my life to have such a wonderful turnaround. Now I’m loved and cared for and have the whole house to run around in. Even though it is true that I’m cute and cuddly, my mom sees me and accepts me for what I really am--one of God’s precious creatures and her companion, not a toy to stick outside once the novelty wears off.

Easter reminds us that, with Jesus in our lives, anything is possible. Jesus can take our dirty, starved, neglected, old lives and make them new. Because of his resurrection, we can be reborn and renewed. All we have to do is accept his love and care. He sees us and loves us for who and what we really are and wants to give us new life.

I love being a bunny--and not just because of the cuteness factor. I, Beany the bunny, am a symbol--a reminder--of how much Jesus loves us. So Happy Bunny Day! I mean, Happy Easter!
