The Resurrection, Life after Easter, and the Pentecost: Perspectives From a Southern Baptist
By Mary Ellen Snell

Children PlayingThe appearance of the risen Christ, and other miracles which followed, ultimately inspired the true believers that galvanized Christianity. One of the miracles as described in Acts 2 was the Pentecost which took place on the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday. On this famous day, Peter and the other eleven disciples were in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit descended on them together. The Spirit was manifested through wind and fire from heaven as the twelve apostles praised God speaking in different languages. The noise brought a crowd of three thousand- Jews and other races- from Jerusalem toward the disciples, each one in the crowd could understand in his own native language what was being said. Peter, under the Holy Spirit, preached to the crowd confronting them about Jesus' miracles, betrayal, death, and resurrection. Most of the crowd believed, and accepted their sin. This documented the beginning of the new Christian church.

As we seek to experience the power of the Holy Spirit thousands of years after the Pentecost, we must heed Peter's call to the crowd: “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” ( Acts 2:38 New International Version)

When we accept Christ, as the power of the Holy Spirit fills our soul, we are accepted as a child of God in heaven eternally. Just as the apostles shared God's love and redemption with the people, as we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are asked to share the love and blessing we have received.

Life is not the same after accepting the sacrifice of Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection. As the Pentecost reminds us, our mission after Easter is to be obedient and use the empowerment and blessing we receive through his Holy Spirit in our daily lives to fulfill his purpose-the building of his church.
