Transient Guest
By Lex Scheuble

Rice PaddyWatching the rice paddies of Nikko fly by
they remind me of the fact that I am
nothing more than a “transient guest”
of Japan.

When I first saw these stalks,
the 10am morning sun still shone in
silent, still puddles
of tranquil water
between just freed buds.
Now, nearly 3 months later,
new growth,
aged as old as I in this new land
are but a bit below
my thigh.

I measure my time
In rice stalks
And rain.

My stomach churned
Breaking my equanimity
Telling me
No, this is where you should
stay.

And trying to comfort myself
I say I should

And want to
Return
To this place
This simple sea of silent
rice stalks and rain
that only the interruption of the
train can absolve.
